Simon Waghorn

Simon Waghorn is one of New Zealand’s most experienced winemakers and is part of New Zealand’s first generation of university-trained winemakers. After graduating from Roseworthy, he returned to New Zealand, where he was part of New Zealand’s transition into a premium wine producing country. Simon formed a formidable reputation as a chardonnay maker as a young winemaker in Gisborne before moving down to Marlborough, where he worked as foundation winemaker for many brands and became known for sauvignon blanc. He started his own wine label, Astrolabe, in 1996, under which he explores Marlborough’s diverse terroir. Simon has a passion for regional varietal expressions and creates a benchmark style for quality Marlborough sauvignon blanc. Simon’s personal style defines an Astrolabe wine — focused, balanced, and elegant.
