Margan

Lisa and Andrew Margan established Margan Wines in 1996 in the Broke Fordwich region of the Hunter Valley. Margan now boast 100 hectares of distinguished vineyards, all certified Sustainably Farmed and planted across two main sites. Most of the vines are old, low yielding and grown on the ancient volcanic soil of the Fordwich Sill, creating a unique style that defines Margan wines. The vines are a mixture of the classic, iconic varieties of the region as well as newer and alternative varieties pioneered by Margan over the decades. All wines are Estate Grown and made on site and are wines of concentration, structure, balance and texture. Wines that speak of their variety, the soil they are grown in and their sense of place. They are modern expressions but with a nod to the traditions of the Hunter, the birthplace of the Australian wine industry.

Margan are leaders in environmental stewardship and are fully accredited with Sustainable Winegrowing Australia with certification benchmarking to the ISO14000 series (International Standards) for best practice. This requires following a detailed Environmental Management Plan (EMP) to reduce impacts across all business operations in the four basic pillars of sustainability – reduction of greenhouse gases, energy efficiency, water management and the reduction of waste. They are also in-conversion to organic viticulture and headed towards carbon neutral.

Margan has been rated a five-star winery (James Halliday) for the last decade, twice winner of the Hunter Valley Cellar Door of the Year, Viticulturist of the Year and a Hall of Fame winner, NSW Tourism Awards. Margan Restaurant is acclaimed Agri-dining and leads the region with their paddock-to-plate ethos.

Andrew Margan

Andrew Margan established Margan Wines in 1996 with life and business partner, Lisa, in the Broke Fordwich region of the Hunter Valley.
From humble beginnings, Margan is now a leading NSW wine brand renowned for outstanding wine quality and a focus on innovation. They boast 100 hectares of distinguished vineyards, all certified Sustainably Farmed. Most of the vines are old, low yielding and grown on the ancient volcanic soil of the Fordwich Sill, creating a unique signature style that defines Margan wines.
Andrew’s winemaking philosophy is focused firmly on making single vineyard wines from the grapes he grows with all wine’s estate-grown and made on site. He makes wines of concentration, structure, balance and texture that are modern expressions but with a nod to the traditions of the Hunter. His favourite wines are those that display excellent varietal definition and reflect the soil they are grown in and their sense of place. He has favourite vintages rather than favourite wines although the uniquely regional styles of savoury, medium bodied Shiraz and pristine, long lived Semillon are both hard to go past.
Andrew was introduced to the wine industry at a young age as his parents had vineyards in the Hunter in the 70’s and his father, Frank Margan, was one of Australia’s first wine journalists. With two University degrees under his belt, a hands-on apprenticeship with the legendary Murray Tyrrell and several years of working in European wineries, it was time to launch his own brand. Since then, the brand has grown in size and reputation, including the addition of award-winning wine tourism operations at their vineyard and winery in Broke.
Apart from some treasured wine trophies and humbling accolades over the decades, Andrew’s career highlights include being awarded the Hunter Valley Viticulturalist of the Year and the more recent news of his (now adult) children coming home to work in the business.
