Port Phillip Estate

Port Phillip Estate is a specialist Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris producer located on the Mornington Peninsula, one of Australia’s foremost cool-climate maritime wine regions. Port Phillip Estate wines are domain grown, vinified and bottled. They endeavour to grow the highest quality fruit that expresses the terroir of each vineyard. Meticulous sustainable viticulture is driven by the belief that the heath of their vineyard soils and thus vines underpin wine quality. Port Phillip Estate vineyards are hand-pruned, shoot thinned, shoot positioned and crop thinned. All fruit is handpicked. The winemaking philosophy is to best preserve the inherent characteristics present in the fruit, making site expressive wines of details and structure.

Port Phillip Estate believe all their wines should convey a sense of the place and the season in which they are grown. All practises in the winery are low-intervention. Fermentation of all our wines occurs spontaneously with native ambient yeasts. This is also the case for malolactic fermentation. French oak is wholly used for all barrel matured wines, red and white. All wines are un-fined and unfiltered.

Glen Hayley Glen Hayley’s started his education with an arts degree that got shelved for one in viticulture and wine sciences. That shift in direction was due to a year of mid-degree overseas travel that opened his eyes to the world of wine. Since then, Hayley has worked vintages overseas in California, the Loire Valley, Central Otago and the Mosel Valley, and back home in the Barossa Valley, Yarra Valley, Central Victoria and elsewhere in Mornington. Hayley’s winemaking is classic and uncluttered, with native yeasts and natural malolactic bacteria employed. Gravity is harnessed for transferring fruit and wine, and all oak is French. The wines are not fined and mostly unfiltered. Hayley works across the estates and a panoply of blocks. The original 9-hectare Port Phillip Estate vineyard in Red Hill (1987) is supplemented by the 11-hectare Balnarring property (1997). Port Phillip Estate bottle their oldest blocks in Red Hill under the Morillon banner, with the rest of the range defined by subzone and variety.
