Tellurian

Family-owned and organically certified, growing and crafting wines in the heart of Heathcote. The Tellurian vineyards roll down the slopes from the Mount Camel ranges, thriving in warm days and cool nights. Founded by Ian Hopkins in 2002, Tellurian are driven to make benchmark wines that showcase the unique site above the vein of red Cambrian soil that has evolved over 550 million years. Tellurian’s first vintage was 2008 Tellurian shiraz, now known as Tranter. Inspired by Rhone varieties including shiraz, grenache, mouverdre, marsanne, roussane and viognier as well as Italian wines; nero d’avola and fiano which are perfectly suited to the climate.

Tobias Ansted

Tobias loves the fact that Tellurian is situated amongst the vineyards. Being an organic producer you couldn’t wish for more – knowing when the wind blows, when the sun shines, when the rain wets the soil. During vintage the team are in the vines every day; ready to pick when the optimal balance is reached.

The subtle changes of each season influence Tellurian’s winemaking choices for each variety.  This includes how they press and ferment the fruit (as whole bunches or berries), how to nurture fermenting grapes and which vessels to chose; open-top concrete vats, stainless steel or large oak foudre. Tellurian predominately use French oak for maturing wines. Striving for gentle winemaking that retains the voice of the vineyards.

Tobias’s desire to make benchmark wines – focusing on the vineyard and letting the vines speak for themselves – was inspired by vintages in Burgundy at Domaine Vincent Girardin, then Cave Yves Cuilleron in Condrieu in 2005, and five years later with Tom Lubbe at Domaine Matassa, a natural wine proponent in the Côtes Catalanes.
